This landscape design client in Northport, NY wanted a freeform backyard with a full host of outdoor living amenities, all in a small space. But because of multiple town restrictions, they had struggled for over 3 years to get a pool on their property. They were required to limit their lot coverage by impervious structures to 30%, which included patios, pools, and buildings, among other items. To further limit landscape construction, they also had a “natural buffer easement” restriction, which required that parts of their property remain wooded. The abundant natural elevation, often a design challenge, became an asset, by helping to create different outdoor rooms in the small space.
